Most of your cat’s diet should be strictly cat food that is nutritionally complete. However, you can always share your food with your cat. Yes, there are human foods that cats can eat, although you should not feed your cat solely on these types of food. Here are the top five human foods that cats can eat.
Meat
Cats are carnivores and hence are naturally created to eat meat. Meat is a rich source of protein, which is important for a strong heart and improved vision. It also helps in maintaining a healthy reproductive system. The type of meat ranges from beef to poultry such as chicken and turkey. It is however advisable that the meat be cooked since raw meat can often make your cat sick. Do not feed your cat what you cannot eat.
Fish
When fish comes to mind, you instantly think of Omega-3 fatty acids. These nutritious components of a fish diet are helpful in improving the eyesight of your cat. Omega-3 fatty acids are also important remedies for arthritis, diseases of the kidneys and the disorders of the heart. You can give your cat canned or cooked fish. However, just like raw meat, raw fish may be potentially harmful to your cat.
Whole grains
The protein content in the whole grains is quite impressive. Cats can eat oatmeal, but they also like eating corn due to its taste and texture. Barley, wheat berries and brown rice are also alternative options. You may have to mash these products before feeding them to your cat. Millet is also nutritious and smaller enough for your cat to gnaw. The grains should also be cooked to ensure that the cat digests them easily and completely.
Vegetables
Studies have proven that felines cannot taste sweet flavours. Therefore, not all cats will like vegetables or fruits in their diet. However, veggies are a rich source of fibre and vitamins. They also supplement as additional sources of water for your cat. They are however not appropriate in large amounts. Nevertheless, you can try some fresh cucumbers, steamed broccoli, but not asparagus. Irrespective of the recipe, you should not include raisins, onions or garlic in your cat food.
Cheese
Though high in protein content, cheese should only be given to cats in small amounts. This is because dairy products are not well handled by the digestive system of the cat. Besides, the protein content in cheese is not as sufficient as the amount in meat. You should therefore go easy on your decision to feed your cat, not only on cheese but also other dairy products.
Although some human foods are edible for cats, they should not be their sole diet. Always purchase the highly nutritious cat food and only use human food as supplements. Do not store human food where your cat can easily reach them. Remember to always consult with the veterinary officer when you are not sure about the choice of food for your cat, or when there are complications after feeding your cat on human food.
